Uses

Because Helium is the next lightest element after hydrogen, and is nonflammable, it is used to fill balloons and airships.

Discovery

In 1895 William Ramsey discovered that the element Helium, which was known to exist in the Sun, also existed on Earth

Availability

Although there is very little in the atmosphere, some deposits of radioactive metals such as Uranium release Helium as part of their decay process, and this is the main commercial source of gas.
