Availability

Iron is currently the least expensive metal, and is the fourth most common element in the Earth's crust.

It is extracted from hematite and magnetite. It also occurs as siderite and iron pyrite. Pure Iron is obtained by reduction of iron oxides. Iron reacts readily with oxygen. This is one problem with using iron. Iron is a good reducing agent and is easily oxidized by water or Oxygen.
